Joy on the Journey is a heartwarming nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing moments of delight and freedom to seniors with mobility impairment and those living with dementia. Through the use of specially designed trishaws (three wheeled bicycles with a comfortable passenger seat at the front) trained volunteers pedal seniors through parks, neighborhoods, and scenic routes, giving them the simple pleasure of fresh air, movement and connection with others. For many riders, who may rarely leave their care facilities, these outings spark genuine joy: smiles, laughter, and even cherished memories stirred by the sights, sounds, and breeze around them. More than just a ride, Joy on the Journey offers a profound reminder that life’s beauty is still fully accessible, regardless of age or cognitive ability, and that the journey itself is always worth celebrating.
Joy on the Journey Colorado Inc. (JOJ) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Larimer County, Colorado, dedicated to providing trishaw rides to older adults and those with mobility impairments who are unable to experience the beauty of the Colorado outdoors. Inspired by the international movement Cycling Without Age, founded in Denmark in 2012, our specially designed battery-powered trishaws are piloted by trained, compassionate volunteers who prioritize kindness, safety, and genuine human connection. Our unhurried rides wind along lakes, trails, and neighborhoods, and create space for conversation and storytelling. Currently based at Seven Lakes Memory Care in Loveland, we are actively expanding into additional Memory Care and Assisted Living centers across Larimer County, and partnering with Dementia Together in 2026 to extend rides to those living at home with their families. Funded entirely by donations and powered by the hearts of our volunteers, every ride we give is a gift, because everyone deserves to experience joy on their journey.
At Joy On The Journey, the people we serve are at the very heart of everything we do. We exist to serve seniors living with physical limitations of disease and aging as well as those with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, individuals who, despite their diagnosis, carry with them a lifetime of stories, love, and spirit. Many of those we serve reside in care facilities or depend on family caregivers at home. They may rarely have the opportunity to venture outside or have the feeling of fun and freedom a trishaw ride may bring. They are mothers, fathers, grandparents, and cherished members of their communities who deserve to feel seen, valued and celebrated. It is for them that we pedal, and it is their smiles that remind us why this journey matters.
